Misaki Kishi - Voicing Difference: Women Dalang and Voice Characterisation in Javanese Wayang Kulit

Guest PhD student on episode 7 of the In One Ear podcast

This is a video by Misaki Kishi, a PhD candidate at the Graduate University for Advanced Studies in Sokendai, Japan. She is studying Javanese Wayang Kulit – the traditional musical puppet theatre performance practice. As part of her project she is learning to be a female Dalang, the puppet artist who also narrates, sings and directs the gamelan orchestra performance: traditionally a male role. The video explores some of the practical issues raised for female Dalang by the voicing of multiple characters required by the performance. Misaki is a guest on episode seven of the C21MP’s In One Ear podcast, released in September 2026.
