Research Problem

The first of the C21MP ‘Research Challenges’ took place at the University of West London’s Townshend Studio – Pete Townshend’s unique collection of synthesisers and electronic musical instruments on loan to UWL. The Call for Participation stated:

  • Come and spend a day and a half exploring this unique collection of instruments by working in a small group (up to 4 people) to address a particular research challenge. Your practice in the studio will be live-streamed on social media.
  • We will invite participants to retrospectively edit the video to create a narrative that illuminates the research challenge and which will be published retrospectively.
  • We have suggested two research challenges (see below) but you can also suggest your own – either as an individual or as a group.
  • For the first day and a half of the ‘Research Challenge’ event (16th – 17th Oct 2025), participants will have access to the entire collection (subject to any maintenance issues) – although obviously we will need to organise a timetable of shared usage.
  • On the second afternoon, engage in a ‘post-challenge’ public date which will form part of a unique Practice Research output combining peer discussion and review with documentation and analysis of the practical work.

Participants will have to commit to being present for both days of the event.

There are five proposed challenges:

  1. Reconstruction and Recontextualization: Consider possible avenues & methods in which pioneering twentieth-century electronic musical instruments may be re-interpreted, re-configured, manupulated, re-conducted conducted & otherwise interconnected so as to generate a distinctly contemporary sonic architecture of composition. What theoretical and practical approaches might be most appropriate to undertake such experiments? This group is now full
  2. Developing a 21st century approach to musical creativity based on Roy Ascott’s Groundcourse and the way his ideas about cybernetics and feedback loops can be used with these instruments. This group is now full
  3. Ab/using the performative design features, resulting gestural imperfections, and sonic signatures of early polysynths in the context of sample-based Hip Hop – particularly the Yamaha GX-1, Yamaha CS-80, and Prophet-10 polysynths
  4. Exploring ideas from electroacoustic composition using commercial electronic synthesisers from the Townshend collection
  5. Exploring how covers or re-creations of contemporary tunes (originals or covers) could be done with the vintage synths instead of software instruments

We will aim to invite successful applicants by mid-September so that groups can engage in some pre-production planning via email, Teams or Zoom and hit the ground running on the first day of the challenge. There will be technical assistance available for those that need guidance with the instruments.

Rationale / Hypothesis

The Rationale for the approach to this strand of the Townshend Studio Research Challenge started from one of the ideas in the original proposal: Exploring ideas from electroacoustic composition using commercial electronic synthesisers from the Townshend collection.

Whereas both Larissa and Paul expressed an interest in exploring the Townshend Collection of synthesisers through the prism of electro acoustic composition, the key to turning it into a group project for three composers used to working with electronics on their own came from Manuella in some follow-up email communication with Simon. Firstly there was:

“As we were sharing ideas, a broad research challenge emerged around the activity and practice of gathering sounds from the synths in the Townshend collection. As a composer I would like to gather sound material for my music making and I posed questions about how this gathering process takes place (especially for me as someone not familiar or expert with synths). My creative process is very dependent on the content of gathered sound material, and putting this process in the spotlight is an important activity to better understand what I collect or discard, what is deemed useful/ treasured or less useful within this gathered set. For me, this activity touches on the building of personal sound libraries, concepts of sample pack curation, understanding the starting points of composition/production from a sound perspective and trying to articulate/demonstrate how this works from a practitioner’s perspective. I’ve found the stories of sound library construction fascinating as compiled by Valantin Becmann in his publication ‘Did you say sound library’ (https://www.musiques-recherches.be/fr/publication/1294-lien-did-you-say-sound-library?fbclid=IwY2xjawM2kZdleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETF2VWlMcjVac1U5ZmI0c2hIAR4IyKoD0zt5l5KeKT0_yg8sdHZeW3I0HOXWr64auI2XRnq76RpjXF0V4yBhng_aem_AL3cAPb4hM4del-hIEsoTQ) and I’m interested in extending these account-based narratives with further nuance and detail.”

Paul also added: “In the last few years, I have been working with malleable oboe multiphonics and looking at the similarities (and differences) to sonorities produced by ring modulation. I would be very interested in working with the Colossus and EMS Synthi 100 to see how I could work with these ideas in the analogue domain with tactile control. (I have worked with the VCS3 in the past at the University of Durham).”

This led to the final approach of using the Colossus to produce sonic material for electroacoustic composition with a particular focus on creating a library of sounds from the Townshend synths (one shots and loops) for future use in music production / composition. The approach was centred on tinkering, experimenting and play (Schaeffer’s concept musique concrete concept of ‘jeu’) as a vehicles for compositional inspiration with the Townshend collection.

This protocol was the draft produced during the running of the Townshend Studio Research Challenge. It was mostly designed as a template following on from the procedures followed that could be developed into a subsequent protocols.io publication for future Group-Based In-Person Research Challenges.
