Extended Techniques and Performance

Within Science & Technology Studies, notions such as Interpretative Flexibility, Innovative Implementation, the Program / Anti-Program and Creative Abuse have been used to explore alternative creative and practical uses that users find after technologies have been invented, designed and distributed. This process of finding uses that go beyond the original design intentions or conventions is also the basis for the idea of extended performance techniques in musical practice. These might include extended forms of virtuosity such as two-hand tapping on the guitar, forms of disruption, damage or destruction such as prepared piano or electronic glitch techniques or ways of extending or altering an instrument’s affordances such as the E-Bow or the Passarelle Bridge. This research problem calls upon researchers to propose more specific sub-questions and projects that explore this larger question in more detail.
